Summer School Program

This summer CCPY decided to help those students who were struggling with the shift from middle school to high school by partnering with the Shortino Foundation and Overfelt High School creating a five week intensive summer school program. The Jump-Start Summer Transition program focused on building skills that promote academic and personal success for underperforming 8th grade graduates & non-graduates.

This program focused on 25 incoming freshman primarily from Fischer Middle School. In an intensive program of this nature, each of the students was given the time and attention needed to become involved and truly understand the material given to them. At any school these days, those students who may not get something on the first several tries often don’t acquire the tools that are necessary for success. Our summer school program made that possible. We were able to work with each student individually to ensure they received the attention they needed. At the end of the program, students who completed our Jump-Start and the Overfelt academic programs received 15 high school credits from the East Side Union High School District (ESUHSD). For the students who qualified, they also received their 8th grade diploma. The success of this program will serve as a pilot project for assisting teachers and staff to connect with this under-reached population. At the end of the program, the students completed a self evaluation as well as participated in a focus group to assist future programs of this nature.

We are so happy with the help this program has provided, and we now know that those 25 students will be more prepared and excited to enter their first year of high school. With the help of those who support us at CCPY, we hope we can help share the means to reach more kids who have not been succeeding and assist them in doing what they need to do to earn their ever important education.
